Hello all, too busy to keep up with the tennis events of this past week? No worries. We have you covered. Here is our Tennis Stage Weekly Wrap-Up for Sunday, May 14th.
The clay court season continues with the Mutua Madrid Open. The Madrid Open is a joint ATP/WTA tournament. Last year's winners were Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep. Djokovic lost in the semi-finals to an in-form Rafael Nadal. Would Simona be able to repeat the success she had last year?
In the men's final- it was Rafael Nadal vs. Dominic Thiem. Thiem started aggressively and was able to keep Nadal on the run early on. Thiem broke and took a 2-1 lead. Nadal stepped up his game and to break back for 3-3. Neither players would break again in the first set. In the tie-break, Thiem continued to attack but Nadal played the important points better and won the first set 7-6(10-8). Nadal broke early in the second set. Although Thiem continued to fight and hustle. Nadal was too consistent and too good. Nadal won the match for 7-6(10-8), 6-4, for his third consecutive tournament win.
What else can be said about Nadal? He is the king of clay so far and has a very good chance on clay. It would be interesting to see how well rejuvenated Federer would play against rejuvenated Nadal on clay. We hope to see this at the French Open in a few weeks.
In the women's final- it was Simona Halep of Romania against French player Kristina Mladenovic. The match was competitive and hard fought from the very beginning. Mladenovic is a gritty player who fights for every point. She has a good serve, a big forehand, a clever drop shot and a great attitude. It was clear that she was a bit tired and slightly hampered by a back injury. Nonetheless, she fought back after losing the first set and won the second set in a tie-break. In the third set, it was apparent that Mladenovic was fading and that Halep would take home the trophy. Halep won 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-2.
Halep played some determined and consistent tennis to win Madrid. With Serena not playing, Maria not back to her top form and no clear contenders stepping up, Halep has a good chance to take the French Open title.
The next event is the Internazionali de BNL d'Italia in Rome. Like Madrid, the BNL d'Italia is a combined ATP/WTA event. The Rome event has already started and most of the top players are there. Will Nadal win his fourth straight clay court tournament? Will Murray and Wawrinka make it further this week than they did in Madrid? Will Maria Sharapova make a stronger showing this week? Tune in next week to find the answer to these questions and more.
