WEEKLY WRAP UP FOR THE WEEK ENDING SUNDAY AUGUST 6TH

WEEKLY WRAP UP

Weekly Wrap Up for the week ending Sunday, August 6th, 2017.

Hello, all. The hard court season is in full swing. Let's take a look at who did well this week.

Women

At the Citi Open in Washington D.C., Ekaterina Makarova of Russia came back to win in three sets against hard hitting Oceane Odin of France. With the win, Makarova reached her first final since 2014.

In the other semi-final, Julia Georges won a hard fought match against fellow German Andrea Petkovic. This was a competitive match that was ultimately decided by Georges’ slightly better serve.

In the final, Georges started strongly. She served well and controlled the majority of the points. She won 6-3. In the second set, Makarova started serving better and steadied herself off of the ground. The set was filled with high-quality tennis that was ultimately won by Makarova in the tie-break. In the third set, it seems that Georges' energy level and consistency dropped. Makarova took advantage of the drop and play and rolled to a 6-3, 6-7(8-6), 6-0 victory in the third set.

In the first semifinal of the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, Coco Vandeweghe served well and overpowered Cici Bellis in straight sets.

In the other semifinal, Madison Keys had a surprisingly easy match against Garbine Muguruza. Keys served better and was more solid off the ground. She won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2

In the Bank of the West final, it was Madison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe. This was their first meeting. This was a hard hitting, high-quality match from the very first point. Both players were evenly matched until Keys pulled away in the tie-break and won 7-6(7-4). The second set was high-quality as well. Both players served well until Keys took advantage of a slight drop in form by Vandeweghe to break at 4-4. Keys served out the match and won 7-6(7-4), 6-4.

United States tennis should be quite happy with the level of tennis that these ladies played. Both women served and played quite well. If these two continue to improve they both can be top 10 players at the very least.

Men

On the men’s side, Alexander Zverev met Kevin Anderson in the Final of the Citi Open. This would be the third meeting between the two. Their first 2 matches were tough 3 set battles. From the very beginning, Zverev pressured Anderson and made it clear that today's match would be more straightforward.

Zverev broke early to take a 2-1 lead. Alexander didn't look back after that. He took the first set 6-4. With great serving and aggressive ground strokes, Zverev was in control through out the match. Zverev broke early in the second set as well and won convincingly 6-4, 6-4.
