MINDSET MONDAY: FOCUS ON YOUR GOALS

Start the week off with the right mindset!

Every Monday we share some key insights from the top players past and present. This week, be like Venus Williams and set goals for more success.

Venus Williams is a tremendous athlete, incredible tennis player, and 7-time grand slam winner. How did she achieve such high levels of success? Easy, just like every other successful person, she set goals and she went after them. Follow these following goal setting tips to achieve more success.

1) Make SMART Goals- Pretty sure you heard of these before but when setting goals they have to be: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Limited.

If we examine the following goal we see it is a SMART goal:

"I serve 85 mph now, I will serve 100 mph within the next 2 months."

Specific (be specific) -  I will increase my serve speed to 100 mph.

Measurable (able to track progress)-  I can measure the speed of my serve with my tennis serve app.

Attainable (It is possible if I work for it)- With hard work and consistency it is possible that I can serve 100 mph.

Realistic (I am able and willing to work toward it)- I serve 85 now. I want to serve 100 mph. I will improve my technique. I will work for it.

Time-Limited (achievable by a certain time)- I will monitor my progress with my app. I will reach 100 mph within 2 months.

2) Separate Performance Based Goals From Outcome Based- Now that we understand SMART goals it is important to separate performance goals from outcome-based goals.

Performance goals are goals we have control over. Examples are: I will show up on time for practice every day, I will hustle for every ball, I will hit every ball on the rise, I will serve 100 mph within 2 months. etc..

Outcome-based goals we do not have complete control over. Examples are: I will win my next match, I will win the state championships, I will win Wimbledon. etc

3) The Bottom Line- We can set all the goals that we want but we only have control over our performance goals. It is ok to have lofty outcome-based goals. It is ok to dream big. However, the key to success is to focus on short-term performance goals. The more short-term performance goals we achieve we build our self-image. We begin to see ourselves as worthy of these goals. Over time we will develop the traits and personality that will allow us to achieve even our loftiest goals!

Don't waste time. Follow these tips and you too will be able to achieve more success.
