Every Friday we will highlight the fitness of top players past and present. This week, be physically fit like Capriati.
Jennifer Capriati is now retired but she was an extremely fit athlete and amazing tennis player. During her career, Jennifer won 3 grand slam titles, was the number 1 player in the world for 17 weeks, and last but not least won the tennis gold medal at the 1992 Olympics.
Jennifer was known for her powerful hitting off of both sides, her mental toughness during matches and her high level of physical fitness.
Some of the highlights of Jennifer's career were as follows: 1) she came from behind to win the Olympic gold medal in 1992 against Steffi Graf in 3 tough sets, and 2) she came from behind once again to win against Martina Hingis in 100 degrees plus heat at the Australian Open in 2002. Capriati was fresh in the 3rd set while an exhausted Hingis faded.
It is obvious that Capriati knew how to win. She won because she put herself in "the right frame of mind" and got herself in the "right physical shape." We can all learn a thing or two from Jennifer's accomplishments.
For the reasons mentioned above and more, Jennifer Capriati is our Fitness Friday athlete.
